Basketball is a team sport that is played between two teams of five players each. The objective of the game is to shoot a ball through a hoop that is mounted 10 feet high on a backboard at each end of the court while preventing the other team from doing the same.
Here are some of the basic rules of basketball:
The game begins with a "jump ball," where the ball is tossed up between two players from each team in the center of the court. The player who jumps the highest and gains possession of the ball gets to start the game with their team.
The team with the ball is called the offense, and their objective is to score points by shooting the ball through the hoop. The team without the ball is called the defense, and their objective is to prevent the other team from scoring.
The game is divided into four quarters, each lasting 12 minutes in professional basketball. In college basketball, the game is divided into two halves, each lasting 20 minutes.
Each team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot. If they fail to do so, the ball is turned over to the other team.
A player can move the ball by dribbling, passing, or shooting. Dribbling is the act of bouncing the ball off the floor while moving. A player can take two steps without dribbling the ball before passing or shooting.
Players are not allowed to carry or hold the ball while moving. This is called a "traveling" violation.
Players are not allowed to make physical contact with one another, and doing so is called a "foul." The team that commits the foul gives the other team free throws or the ball, depending on the situation.
A player who makes a shot from behind the "three-point line" (a line on the court 23 feet 9 inches away from the hoop) is awarded three points. Shots made inside the three-point line are worth two points.
A game is won by the team with the most points at the end of the fourth quarter or overtime period, if necessary.
These are just some of the basic rules of basketball. There are many more detailed rules that players and coaches need to be familiar with to play the game at a high level.
